Abstract

When the organization is viewed as a complex series of interlocking patterns of human relationships, workflow patterns and control patterns, the opportunity for the individual to innovate and shape his own environment becomes apparent. Creativity and innovation are a product of the individual’s ability to extract the time and energy from the “fire-fighting” preoccupations of the moment, in order to modify the pressures and stresses on himself and on his subordinates. The hierarchy is no barrier to this; it is, as it has been in every culture, a challenge to the able.— Leonard Sayles (1)
