Abstract

Efficient computational tools, for solving modern power system problems, play a major role in almost every aspect of the operation and planning of electric power systems. Therefore, in solving most problems associated with an emerging power system, whose key characteristics are flexibility and robustness, alternative analytical tools and algorithms that are capable of providing quick solutions to power system problems are of great necessity. Conventional power-flow analysis has been the usual technique employed for solving power system problems, there are various challenges associated with it. In order to overcome the limitations identified with the traditional approach, an alternative approach of Network Structural Characteristics Theory (NSCT), based on circuit theory, has been developed. This paper attempts to review the trends and the challenges combating the usual conventional approach of power-flow analysis in solving power system problems. The recent trends in the approach of NSCT and its applications, as an alternative solution, for resolving most modern power system issues are also presented.
