Abstract

This paper presents an overview of several modeling methods, tools and approaches which are suitable for the network protocol design. In the beginning of the paper the necessity of the modeling usage during the protocol design is explained. Then Petri Nets features are summarized together with their basic definition and explanation on simple graphical model example. Later, Colored Petri Nets are presented with emphasis on differences from original Petri Nets and their features are explained on graphical representation of simple model created using CPN Tools. The paper is concluded with a brief explanation of modeling approaches most suitable for network protocol modeling.
