Abstract

The present study was undertaken to evaluate to what extent cadmium present in natural waters is associated to organic matter and/or to large inorganic molecules. Cadmium behaviour was investigated by adding to water carrier-free 109Cd radiotracer. Identification and characterization of organic and large inorganic species of cadmium were established by fractioning inorganic and organic matter in natural waters with the ultrafiltration technique. Cadmium content and distribution were correlated to organic carbon, inorganic and organic phosphorous, and to soluble silica concentrations. Results and trends are reported and discussed.
