Abstract

Anorectal disorders are prevalent in human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients. This high frequency is often related to receptive anorectal intercourse leading to associated trauma and sexually transmitted diseases. In addition, anorectal neoplasia is increased in these patients because of human papilloma virus infection. Gastroenterologists must be knowledgeable of the anatomy of the anorectum, the methods for evaluation of anorectal complaints, and the appearance of common anorectal diseases.
