Abstract

This paper describes a Decision Support System for supporting bridge designers in the early stages of foundation design. The system has been developed using information acquired from practising bridge engineers, geotechnical engineers and estimators. The system is limited to the design of abutments, spread and piled foundations for small to medium span road bridges. The design of piled foundations is conducted with the support of recognised pile design software. The spread foundation and abutment design has been developed in two stages, initially using the Strategy Detection Algorithm (SDA) and further to that the Graphically Assisted Constraint Satisfaction Method. The transition between the stages was instigated by evaluating the prototype in industry. Both methods and the evaluation are briefly described. The system is developed in Visual C++, following an object based representation and utilising a Windows style interface.
