Abstract

This paper presents a model predictive control for the superconducting magnetic energy storage (MPC-based SMES) system, which can be applied to a voltage source converter and a dc/dc chopper in the SMES system together. The SMES system is implemented in a microgrid to control the constant power flow at the point of common coupling, frequency, and voltage of microgrid. The control performance of the MPC-based SMES system is compared with that of the proportional–integral (PI) control method. The harmonics involved in dc current for the superconducting coil are analyzed to estimate the reduction of the eddy current losses compared to PI technique. The efficacy of the proposed control system is verified via simulations in the MATLAB/Simulink environment.
