Abstract

ABSTRACTAbout 60 million Americans live in rural areas of the United States. These Americans have a lower life expectancy than their urban counterparts. There are many factors contributing to poorer health outcomes in rural America and one significant factor is limited access to healthcare. Telehealth is increasingly recognized as a solution for supporting rural access to healthcare. While many studies explore effective telehealth strategies, there are fewer studies that focus on telehealth application strategies and telehealth provider competencies specifically needed to support rural patients. This article aims to begin filling these gaps, examining best practices in rural telehealth application and provider competencies that are critical for effective rural patient care. Findings hold implications for faculty, medical professionals, and patients. Finally, the article identifies and consolidates five ideal telehealth application strategies and five telehealth provider competencies to support effective telehealth care in rural settings.
