Abstract

This paper describes the application of data analysis techniques in the database field. First we present some results of applying this approach to objects such as users and queries in order to capture database usage patterns. Furthermore, we consider ways in which semantic constraints can be captured by applying data analysis techniques to the contents or views of a database. The knowledge acquired by means of this approach is integrated into a knowledge-based system allowing enhanced decision capability with regard to query optimization and database schema refinement.
