Abstract

Coaching supervision is a growing practice in the Americas, yet there are few data or research studies about supervision in an American context. This chapter begins with a brief overview of coaching supervision in the US context and a summary of a systemic developmental approach to supervision. During the dialogue, the supervisor helps the supervisee examine the issue from multiple perspectives and facilitates subject-object shifts in the supervisee's perception and understanding of the material they are exploring. E. Patterson argued that supervision is an intervention that has a powerful application to leaders and people practitioners in roles other than that of a coach, and that its relevance now is greater than ever before. As the practice of coaching supervision in the US continues to grow, it is interesting to consider what motivation and rationale for coaching supervision may be most effective in the US context.
