Abstract

This paper tells the story of about 10 years of involvement of our research group in the application of mathematical techniques for the management of complex water supply networks. Two main topics are discussed: optimal control over 24-hr periods, and state estimation and leak detection. The mathematical background is described, simulation results are presented, and the practical difficulties in real-life implementation of the pieces of software and their acceptation by industrialists are discussed.
