Abstract

During the summer of 1970, 18 sixth-grade teachers in Iowa City were recruited and trained to teach Man: A Course of Study (MACOS). In order to test what kind of training experience is best for teachers using these materials we divided the group into three. One was given a three-week intensive workshop in anthropology, another was given a one-week intensive workshop in the use of the prepared materials, and the third group received both. During the academic year 1970-71, these 18 teachers introduced MACOS into 14 grade schools in Iowa City. Pretests and posttests were given the children in order to evaluate the amount of learning which occurred. In addition, video tapes were made of the teachers as they developed various themes in the course.We had expected that the combination of anthropology plus the one-week familiarization with MACOS materials would be the best preparation.
