Abstract

Abstract An understanding of the anatomy of the heart and great vessels is vital to the practice of cardiology. This chapter covers the following components of cardiac anatomy: mediastinum, pericardium, the great vessels (aorta, pulmonary artery, superior and inferior venae cavae), cardiac chambers (atria, ventricles), valves, leaflets, coronary circulation, and the cardiac conduction system. Enlargement of a cardiac chamber or great vessel may displace or compress an adjacent noncardiac structure. Congenital heart diseases related to anatomy are also reviewed.
