Abstract

Optical design and analysis software has evolved over the years to address specific needs in several application areas. CODE V(superscript ®), Optical Research Associates' (ORA(superscript ®)) optical design and analysis software package, was originally developed in the 1960's as a ray tracing and optimization engine to support the design activities of ORA' s Engineering Services group The software was used primarily on commercial and government imaging applications (cameras, projectors, etc.) Today, different customer applications drive the need for specialized design and analysis capabilities. This paper will discuss the optical design process, and then look at several application areas in terms of the design process to define some of the specific design and analysis capabilities required for their successful design.
