Abstract

It has been observed that variational methods, which permit the reduction of the field equations to the equivalent variational problems and subsequently admit direct methods for this solution of these problems, have not been employed in acoustics. In this paper, the field equations are derived by energy methods in a manner that demonstrates the existence of equivalent variational problems. Thus, having shown the admittance of direct methods for solution of acoustics problems, a modified Galerkin procedure is employed in solving a number of acoustics problems and comparing their solution with existing ones.
