Abstract

Thermal analysis provides a rapid means of assessing the compatibility of small samples of polymer blends. In this chapter, the application and practical limitations of thermal analysis in the study of polymer blends are explored. Thermodynamic principles of blend miscibility are presented and the usefulness of thermal methods are discussed in relation to other techniques frequently used to characterise polymer blends. Examples of technically significant polymer blends are given and a detailed discussion of quantitative thermal analysis of both compatible and phase separated blends is presented with attention to areas of current controversy.
