Abstract

An overview of the current status of NMR research in the field of solid electrolytes is presented. After outlining the NMR method we describe what kind of information NMR yields by discussing recent papers dealing with substances such as hydrogen conductors, β-alumina, and Li, Ag, and F ion solid electrolytes. Special attention is paid to the dynamics of the mobile ions (determination of diffusion pathways, self-diffusion coefficients, activation energies, hopping times, local motion), the influence of phase transitions, and dimensionality effects. Finally, we point to some new interpretative aspects of NMR in connection with correlation functions, dimensionality effects, relaxation by paramagnetic impurities, and quadrupolar relaxation of central lines.
