Abstract

The concept of a computer program's ‘hazard rate profile’ is introduced. A software fault's hazard rate is the amount the fault contributes to the overall program failure rate. The hazard rate profile describes the relationship between the program's failure rate and fault content by summarizing the relative proportion of software fault hazard rates that fall into different hazard rate classes. The usefulness of the hazard rate profile concept is shown by applying it to the tasks of software reliability prediction, growth modelling and allocation.
