Abstract

This issue of the Journal of Fusion Energy is devoted to the edited transcripts of a symposium sponsored jointly by Fusion Power Associates, the University of Rochester, and the Strategic Defense Initiative Office of the Department of Defense. The symposium took place at the University of Rochester in April 1985 and was entitled "Lasers and Particle Beams for Fusion and Strategic Defense." As fusion science and technology has matured, the question as been arising more frequently, "What will the applications of fusion be?" Historically, fusion has been developed for use in the generation of electricity in central station power plants.
