Abstract

Abstract Advances in the development of adequate devices for optical information processing applications have been slow. Some success has been achieved through the use of one-dimensional acousto-optic devices for the processing of serial signals, and ferroelectrics have been among the materials playing a key role in the development of these devices. On the other hand, the real-time, two-dimensional spatial light modulators are still far from adequate. No spatial light modulator exists that simultaneously offers low halfwave exposure (<1nJ/cm2), high resolution (>l00 cycles/mm), high framing speed (>1kHz) and modest storage times (∼1hr). More materials research is necessary. This paper is a brief review of the status of some of the devices that are being used in optical information processing applications.
