Abstract

This paper describes the practical experience gained in a project the aim of which was to introduce expert system technology into a manufacturing organisation. The project involved the development of an expert system shell and a knowledge base for fault diagnosis in numerically controlled machine tools. Particular emphasis is placed on the implementation strategy and the difficulties encountered during the course of the project. Factors discussed include management support and availability of technical expertise. Current limitations of expert system technology with respect to engineering applications are also discussed.
