Abstract

Prints produced by utilizing thin sections as negatives in a photographic enlarger are useful for study and display of many petrographic features. It is also possible to produce prints in cross-polarized mode directly on the enlarger. Design of a thin section holder, exposure times for common rock types, and several sample illustrations are provided. Applications include rapid inexpensive cataloguing of large numbers of sections, providing of a preliminary map of the entire section for location of features during actual study by microscopy, production of visual teaching aids without employment of photomicrography equipment and production of illustrations for publication.
