Abstract
This chapter explores the author’s attempts to support the development of adaptive leadership in Eastern Europe. Through exploring breakdowns in their consulting practice and their attempts to negotiate these together with clients, the chapter discusses how they found a way forward through adapting adaptive leadership. The chapter reviews some of the unique characteristics of leadership and organizational culture in the eastern European context. It then goes on to explore their consulting practice and demonstrate their attempts to make sense of some of the challenges they encountered. Ultimately, the chapter challenges some of the systemic assumptions about organizations that appear to underpin the adaptive leadership discourse, and proposes a more social and processual understanding.
