Abstract
8nder plane strain condition a new formula of intermediate principal stress pressure is derived by the generalized Hook's law. Then the formulas of the active and passive earth pressure are derived based on the unified twin shear strength theory and theory of Rankine earth pressure. The weighted coefficient b considering effects of intermediate principal stress, the Poisson's ratio and static earth pressure coefficient is introduced to the formula. The formula of Rankine earth pressure is only a special example of the proposed formula. It is shown through a example that compared with data from experiment, the active earth pressures are larger by Rankine's theory and in good agreement by the proposed formulae.
