Abstract

Mechanical analysis of the catheter and guide wire in the blood vessel is a key to improving vascular intervention surgery, particularly for brain vascular interventional surgery. The tubular mechanics in oil-gas wells represent a mature theoretical mechanics system in the field of petroleum engineering that solves issues similar to those of a catheter and guide wire. This paper tries to answer that can tubular mechanics in oil-gas wells be used in vascular intervention medicine? The space shapes of the well path and the blood vessel path, the compositions of the oil-gas tubular string and the catheter and guide wire string, the working processes of a tubular string in an oil-gas well and a guide catheter string in vascular interventional surgery, the interactions between an oil-gas well string and the borehole wall and that between a catheter and guide wire string and the vessel wall were compared. They are both elastic tubes or rod strings with circular cross-sections moving in long branching tubes filled with fluid. Tubular mechanics in oil-gas wells can be introduced to vascular intervention medicine to perform mechanical analyses of a catheter and guide wire string in a blood vessel. As a demonstration, mechanical analysis of a catheter and guide wire string in a blood vessel while rotating, sliding forward or pulling out is established.
