Abstract

The Xinjiang goat had a lower cashmere weight (137 g), shorter cashmere length (5.0 cm), but finer cashmere diameter (12.74 μm) than other types. If graded up with the Liaoning cashmere goat to the 2nd generation, cashmere weights were 320 g and 300 g for yearling bucks and yearling does, respectively, cashmere length was 7.0 cm and cashmere diameter increased by 2.36 μm. In Xinjiang Autonomous Region, there is a wild goat of the Capra ibex type with large size (height at withers 84 cm, body length 92 cm, heart girth 100 cm for adult buck), cashmere length was 5.88 cm, cashmere diameter was 12.7–13.0 μm. The wild bucks were crossed with hybrid does of Liaoning cashmere goats and Xinjiang goats in the years 1983 and 1985, for the purpose of creating a new breed with larger body size, greater cashmere production, longer cashmere and finer in diameter. Hybrid progeny included wild goat breeding of 12.5–25.0%. Cashmere weight of yearling bucks had reached 400 g, yearling does 380 g, with cashmere diameter 11.4–13.0 μm, and length 6.0 cm. At present, there are over 2700 hybrids of wild goats in the Urumqi Region and some problems about wild goat crossbreeding are discussed.
