Abstract

Abstract Pigmented and non-pigmented trout and salmon species were obtained from the ocean and from aquaculture facilities. Sarcoplasmic extracts of each sample were made and protein separations were obtained using vertical plate gel electrophoresis (VPE); rainbow, brook, and brown trout were easily distinguished from coho, chinook, and sockeye salmon. No correlation or relationship appears to exist between pigment concentration and VPE protein pattern. These fish can thus be distinguished regardless of the level of pigmentation.
