Abstract

New insight is given into the complex molecular structure and composition of thin-film deposits of acrylic acid (AA) and 1,7-octadiene (OD) by variable-temperature ellipsometry. An AA plasma polymer is shown to contain nonbound, volatile material, which includes water, AA monomer, and oligomers thereof. The addition (0.25 molar fraction) of OD to an AA plasma is sufficient to cross-link most of these volatiles into the plasma copolymer deposit.
