Abstract

Continuous process monitoring in gaseous, liquid or molten mediais a fundamental requirement for process control. Besidestemperature and pressure other process parameters such as level, flow, concentration and conversion are of special interest. Morequalified information obtained from new or better sensors cansignificantly enhance the process quality and thereby productproperties. Ultrasonic sensors or sensor systems can contributeto this development. The state of the art of ultrasonic sensors and their advantagesand disadvantages will be discussed. Commercial examples will bepresented. Among others, applications in the food, chemical andpharmaceutical industries are described. Possibilities andlimitations of ultrasonic process sensors are discussed.
