Abstract

In the present paper the turbulence models of Chien and of Wilcox are applied to predict three types of two-dimensional free turbulent shear flows. At the end, as an example of a more complex configuration, the flow field behind an axisymmetric body with jet is calculated. The task of the present study was to examine the reliability of two turbulence models in free shear flows, which were implemented especially for use in wall boundary layers. Knowing the shortcomings of the k-ω model in free shear flows expectation is endorsed that the k-e model of Chien produces better predictions than the model of Wilcox. But the results show that in cases of practical interest the initial profiles, especially those for the turbulence parameters, are more relevant for the prediction of the mean flow parameters in the near field than the applied turbulence models.
