Abstract

In Japan, a number of recognized sites with soil and groundwater contamination are increasing in the last decade through the amendment of the related laws, such as the obligation of groundwater monitoring. In Saga, Japan, groundwater pollution by trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE) from a factory was disclosed through the monitoring of surrounding wells. Prefectural government and the factory are considering remediation of the pollution. It is necessary for the effective remediation to reveal groundwater movement and pollutants transportation by not only a field investigation but a simulation as well. The object of this study is to simulate groundwater movement and transportation of pollutants by a 3-D numerical groundwater model. The model is applied to the polluted area in Saga. In this report, good agreement in groundwater head and contamination concentration is obtained both in time and in space.
