Abstract

Heat losses due to the emission of thermal radiation can be reduced by heat mirrors. Mirrors that combine both high infrared reflectance and good visual transmittance consist of thin films deposited on glass. Thin films of strongly n-doped In2O3 or SnO2 and very thin metal films between spectrally selective anti-reflection coatings are of particular interest. The optimization of these systems, regarding the physical mechanisms and the limits of the material properties, are discussed. Some applications to light sources, solar collectors and windows are described.
