Abstract

The Time Spectral method has been proposed for the fast and ecient computation of periodic unsteady flows. The algorithm has been validated with both 2D and 3D test cases and applied successfully for internal and external aerodynamics. It has shown tremendous potential for reducing the computational cost compared to conventional time-accurate methods, by enforcing periodicity and using Fourier representation in time, leading to spectral accuracy. Until now, the algorithm could be used only for flows where the frequency of unsteadiness was known a priori. In this paper, we propose a method to compute the time period as part of the solution to the unsteady problem, in cases where the frequency of unsteadiness is not predefined.
