Application of the Stallwood Jet and dc Arc to the Analysis of Air Contamination in Inert Gases

Abstract

This exploratory paper demonstrates the quantitative response of H2, N2, and O2 in 50% argon-50% helium to a 20-A dc arc and 1% thoriated-tungsten electrodes. This work also illustrates the feasibility of exciting the spectra of these gases, as well as chlorine, at atmospheric pressure and at other relatively simple conditions with a minimum of special facilities.
