Abstract
植物由来アロマ成分（香り・匂い）は，植物の生存戦略において重要な役割を担う．われわれのよく知る花の香り以外にも，害虫に食べられることでも植物の匂いは放出される．これらの匂いは，害虫の天敵をひきつけ，周囲の植物にも「危険」を知らせる警報としての役割を担う．このように，動けない植物は匂いを駆使することで周囲の生物とコミュニケーションを図る(1)．植物アロマ成分であるテルペン類は，抗虫性，抗炎症，抗がん，およびリラクゼーション（抗ストレス）などの多岐にわたる薬理効果が備わることから，世界中の研究者や医療関係者から注目されている．本稿では，植物が作り出す揮発性テルペンなどの生態系における機能，当該成分を利用した有機農法の開発，新たな医薬品（漢方）および機能性食品成分としての可能性について紹介する．
