Abstract

AbstractConsidering the method of Pathological Index-refined (PIr) performs well in separating controlled traction group from non-traction samples, this chapter applies this PIr method to Chinese archaeological samples for investigating cattle traction practice in ancient China. Archaeological samples of the Late Neolithic and Bronze Age are discussed respectively, but the latter is the research focus due to sample availability. Models from both phalanges and metapodials show that cattle traction practice was likely developed during the Chinese Bronze Age. A series of different PIr models among sites and periods even further indicate the imbalance of cattle traction use in ancient China.KeywordsCattle tractionChinaPIrLate NeolithicBronze Age
