Abstract

An electro-optical device, the Goldberg Microaerofluorometer (MAFIA), has been developed to provide a nearly instantaneous fluorescent aerosol count. It has an effective sampling rate of 12 liters min−1 and a useful sensitivity for concentrations as low as 0.1 particle liter−1 for selected fluorescent particles ≧0.5 μ in diameter. In a room with normal activity or in areas such as active hospital corridors, fluorescent tracer concentrations of 1 particle liter−1 can be quantitatively assayed.
