Abstract

In Vietnam, professional training is an annual compulsory task for every teacher to continuously improve the quality of education. Through the process of fostering to improve their professional capacity, teachers continuously improve their influence and support to improve the quality of learning for students. Teachers’ professional development is most effective and sustainable when placed in a supportive community of learning; It is necessary to make teacher professional development tied to student learning and curriculum innovation, and it must be embedded in the daily life of the school. Professional activities in the direction of approaching the “Study of Lessons” from Japan, are approaches that emphasize how teachers jointly design lesson plans, observe teaching class time, reflect, analyze, and share students’ learning. The lesson study model addresses both teachers and students learning. Through studying students learning, teachers learn and develop their expertise together. This chapter discusses and analyzes the lesson study model in teacher training in Vietnam. The first part of the chapter will give an overview of the lesson study model; The second part focuses on discussing the issue of teacher professional development through a lesson study model in Vietnam. Next, the third part discusses the difficulties, barriers as well as benefits when implementing the lesson study model in professional activities toward teacher professional development in Vietnam. The last part of the chapter will propose recommendations on using the lesson study model to improve professional capacity for teachers effectively in Vietnam.
