Abstract

Assessment is made in the present study of the applicability of the H3‐proline autoradiographic topographic method to dental and supportive parodontal tissues. Furthermore, comparisons are made of the distribution and rates of matrix production of the mineralized tissues, dentin, cementum and alveolar bone at the maxillary first molars and incisors of 5‐week‐old, short‐lived strain of BNL Swiss albino mice. The results show that tooth collagen matrix production by dentogenic and cementogenic tissues is signicantly larger than by dental or appendicular osteogenic tissues, with incisor dentin formation exceeding all surface activities evaluated to date. It is concluded that the H3‐proline topographic method is a sensitive technique offering greater refinement, and a broader spectrum of analytic possibilities than presently used technology. Integrated cellular and matrical evaluation is achieved, thus adding a new dimension to the assessment of current problems in oral biology.
