Abstract

For the Earth's lower mantle an empirical expression of the Poisson ratio is newly developed to supplement “Model 1” which consists of a set of three-parameter approximating functions for the pressure, the (isothermal or adiabatic) bulk modulus, its pressure derivative and the seismic parameter. Model 1 thus completed is fitted to appropriate lower-mantle values following from the parameterized Earth model (PEM) of Dziewonski, Hales and Lapwood. As it proves to be more consistent with the PEM values for pressure, bulk modulus, seismic parameter and seismic velocities than the complete third-order finite-strain theory, it can be used for an adequate representation of the lower mantle. We use it also for evaluation and comparison of some of the most important different formulations of the Grüneisen parameter for the lower mantle.
