Abstract

Sensorineural hearing loss affects not just the ability to perceive sound, but to distinguish speech in the presence of background noise. Multi-microphone directional technologies have been shown to improve signal-to-noise ratio, and thus the ability of hearing aid wearers to perceive speech in noise. The application of these technologies varies depending on the degree and configuration of the hearing loss. This article offers an overview of the effectiveness of directional systems and offers suggestions for the application of directional systems on a variety of hearing loss configurations.
