Abstract

AbstractThe results of butadiene polymerization initiated with CoCl2 · 4Py/Et2AlCl/H2O are presented. The effectiveness of statistical experimental design techniques is demonstrated in identifying the individual and joint effects of polymerization variables on rate constants, molecular weights, and polydispersity. The proposed conversion model, representing polymerization with instantaneous initiation and bimolecular termination, was found to provide an adequate representation of experimental conversion data. Evidence indicates that water is not only directly involved in the initiation reaction but also plays an important role in the chain transfer reaction.
