Abstract

This paper has suggested methods for applying SPC techniques to batch processes. Batch-to-batch variation can be monitored using SPC control charts. Batch phase variations can also be monitored using a difference control chart. These charts can be used by the operator to detect differences from the standard and to judge the effect of adjustments that are made to the process. As with all SPC applications, the primary goal should be to make the correct adjustment over a period of time and not make an incorrect adjustment over too short a period of time. Since most batch processes are not highly automated or even well understood, many manual adjustments that have varying effects on the SPC variable are available to the operator. An SPC strategy must be devised for these variables using these control charts.
