Abstract

Abstract The Gambia is a small, densely‐populated country along the Gambia River on the Atlantic coast of West Africa. Most of the population depends upon subsistence agriculture. Groundnuts are the primary export crop, with fruit and vegetable production for local sale as well as air shipment to Europe increasing. Under the Gambia Agricultural Research and Diversification (GARD) project contracted by USAID, the University of Wisconsin has established a soil testing laboratory at the Yundum Agricultural Research Station to serve both research and service functions. Soil test procedures include the following: water pH and electrical conductivity (EC) in 2:1 water: soil suspension; 0.01M CaCl2 pH; available P by colorimetric determination in Bray I extractant; K, Ca, Mg, and Na by flame photometry on NH4OAc extractant; organic matter by weight loss on ignition; and particle size analysis.
