Abstract

Scanning single-pulse ultrasonic spectroscopy system using a wide-band polymer transducer, an X-Y stage, and a frequency analysis with fast Fourier transformation (FFT) was successfully applied for the evaluation of the internal structure in carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP). The analyzed power spectral data revealed clearly the details of the internal structure of the sample such as the diameter of carbon fibers, the location of the separation within the CFRP layers. This method is suggested to become a powerful method for the nondestructive inspection of composite materials including the CFRP.
