Abstract

THE IMPACT of computer technology in the form of the OCLC, Inc. network has been revolutionary and widespread in all kinds of libraries across the country. Recognition by library educators of the corresponding need to familiarize library school students with OCLC is made evident by the growing number of remote terminals acquired for library school use and by the incorporation of a unit on OCLC terminal use in the curriculum. This study explores the feasibility of using programmed instruction to teach six basic search codes used in retrieving bibliographic records for English language monographs from the OCLC data base. Participants were students enrolled in an introductory cataloging and classification course, L510 Organization of Materials and Information, at the Indiana University Graduate Library School.
