Abstract

Photodynamic therapy can selectively destroy target tissues through the irradiation with defined wave-length light following topical or systemic application of photosensitizers. Before 1990s, the research on photodynamic therapy is mainly focused on the diagnosis and treatment of tumors. Along with the emerging of new photosensitizers as well as the improvement in medical technique, the indications of photodynamic therapy have been increasingly expanded. Particularly, it has shown potential efficiency in the treatment of some localized skin infections. Recently, the application of photodynamic therapy in the treatment of localized skin infections has turned into a new hotspot of research.
