Abstract

Four mineral specimens were analyzed by particle desorption mass spectrometry using californium-252 as the primary ion source. Pollucite, amblygonite, microcline, and lepidolite, chosen for their high alkali metal content, were characterized with no apparent decrease in the extraction field strength even though the samples were thick and insulating. Further, given the very low bombarding ion fluence, no complications due to charge accumulation on the sample were encountered. Qualitative results obtained by PDMS were validated by XPS, EMP, and SIMS. PDMS provides for a rapid, nondestructive determination of alkali metals in complex natural matrices with minimal sample preparation.
