Abstract

Under very general mathematical assumptions, certain fundamental properties of lateral impedance within the human visual system follow as a consequence of theorems in functional analysis. These properties explain variations in the threshold for detecting a spot of light superimposed on illuminated backgrounds of different sizes (the spatial sensitization effect), and account for the spatial Broca-Sulzer effect, as well.
