Abstract

A poly- β-hydroxybutyric acid (PHB) production model has been proposed and is used to calculate the optimal profiles. Feedforward concentration control, off-line optimal control, and on-line optimal control algorithms are applied to enhance the PHB productivity. When an off-line optimal control algorithm was applied, the resulting profiles of glucose and ammonium chloride concentration were different from those calculated from the model. Therefore, an on-line control algorithm was necessary to compensate for the errors between the model prediction and actual measurements. By applying the on-line optimal control algorithm, the final PHB concentration was increased to 17.1 g/l which compares favorably with 13.9 g/l obtained with the off-line optimal control.
